Your Child's First Dental Appointment
Among the many questions that come along with being a first-time parent is when you should take your child in for their first dental appointment. While many believe the health of baby teeth is not as important to overall oral health, unhealthy baby teeth and poor oral hygiene at an early age can set one up for a lifetime of tooth and gum problems.
The answer to this question is that you should bring your child in for his or her initial dental appointment by age one. While all the child’s teeth may not have erupted by this point, the dentist can answer questions and provide useful information, such as:
- Teething and tooth development
- How to care for your child’s teeth and mouth
- Common oral habits in children, and any habits your child may have
- Links between your child’s diet and his or her oral health
- Prevention of accidents that could damage the face and teeth
Next, the dentist will perform an examination; this is generally done with the child in your lap, with you knee-to-knee with the dentist. Your child may squirm or fuss a bit; however, most of the exam is just visual. Based on the exam, the dentist will recommend when you should return for the next visit. If there are any issues, he or she will also provide the necessary treatment.
