October is National Dental Hygiene Month
Our dentist in Chicago understands the importance of oral hygiene habits year-round, but especially in October. This year, the American Dental Association wants to focus on four simple routines that can have a big impact on your overall oral health. Brushing, flossing, rinsing and chewing may sound simple, but they are the key pillars in taking care of your oral health.
Brushing
You should brush your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes each. Most patients benefit from soft-bristled toothbrushes unless otherwise noted by our dentist in Chicago. The brushing technique that you use is also important. You should place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums and gently move it back and forth in tooth-wide strokes. Brush all surfaces of your teeth including the outer, inner and chewing surfaces. Also, make sure to brush your tongue to get rid of bacteria there as well.
Flossing
Aim to floss at least once a day to get rid of bacteria that build up between your teeth. You’ll be able to reach plaque in-between your teeth that brushing cannot reach.
Rinsing
Using mouthwash is another beneficial habit. Rinsing with mouthwash can reduce your chance of dental decay and infection.
Chewing
Finally, chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes after you eat can help neutralize the acids produced by bacteria and help provide disease-fighting substances.
