What are dental implants?
Dental implants are replacements for the root of a tooth. They look, feel, and function just like normal teeth. They are a great alternative for teeth that have been lost. They not only replace teeth, they prevent bone loss and stabilize jawbone shape and density. The implant is made up of two main parts (depending on the type of implant). Single tooth replacements are made up of one dental implant, which acts as the root of the tooth, and one crown, which is the visible part of the implant that looks like the rest of your teeth. Multiple tooth replacements will have several (usually two) dental implants with a bridge, or a series of crowns, that spans the gap of missing teeth.
How are dental implants placed?
Dental implants are surgically placed by dental health professionals. The process is meticulous and requires careful evaluation, planning, and expert precision. An oral surgeon or dental surgery specialist of some kind evaluates the missing tooth site and makes plans for the implant. They send the plans to a dental lab, and the lab technician crafts the actual restoration. A restorative dentist who has the knowledge and background to place the implant performs the actually oral surgery.
What are dental implants made of?
Dental implants are usually made from titanium and porcelain. The implant itself is made from titanium because it fuses to bone, which secures the implant. Titanium is light and incredibly strong, making it a good replacement for a tooth. The crown of the implant is often made from porcelain, which also acts like a tooth. It is the same color and sheen of normal teeth, making the crown indistinguishable from natural teeth.
Are dental implants right for me?
Have you lost any teeth? Then more than likely, dental implants are right for you. However, it is also important that you are in otherwise good health. Certain health problems may interfere with the dental implant fusing to your bone. If you have diabetes, cancer, periodontal disease (otherwise known as gum disease), alcoholism, or are a smoker, you may not be a candidate for dental implants because the state of your bone or gums are not strong enough to support the implant. In any case, make sure to divulge your full medical history to the medical team who is in charge of your restoration.
